GMAT Exam Format and Length

The GMAT exam is delivered via computer in individualized workstations. Being computer-adaptive (rather than computer-based) allows the GMAT exam to determine a test taker's true ability by selecting questions based on previous answers and the test design.

The GMAT test has three sections

  • Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA)
  • Verbal Section
  • Quantitative Section

The AWA is the first section that the examinee faces when he/she starts to answer the test. Managers are supposed to be proficient at writing as this is an apt indicator of their logical ability, communicative skills and creativity. This section again comprises of two sub sections-  

  • The Issue based essay
  • The Argument based essay

Both the essays are scored by two readers each- an expert and an e-reader. The evaluators give scores on a rating of 0-6 scales. Then an average score is derived. The time allotted for the essays is 30 minutes each.The aspirant is supposed to present his or her perspective on an issue and support it with cogent ideas and examples. It is expected that the writer is proficient in the conventions of International English usage to support his opinion. Clarity of expression, precision, cogency, and linguistic proficiency are some of the criteria that the critical reader would be expecting from the aspirant.
 
Analysis of an Issue
(30 minutes, 1 essay topic)
   
This section is designed to gauge

  • your ability to argue effectively and persuasively for a posit on an issue, using sound reasons and relevant supporting examples
  • your ability to present your ideas in a cohesive and organized manner
  • your expertise with the English language (diction, word usage,  and vocabulary)

The argument essay is basically a case study involving a project prepared on the basis of certain criteria or premises. The examinee has to support or weaken the conclusions of the statement with convincing logicality. Adherence to standard usage and linguistic convention is expected.

This section is designed to gauge.
your ability to reason critically, analytically, and logically .
your ability to present your ideas in a cohesive and organized manner
your dexterity with the English language (diction, word usage, and vocabulary).
In the quantitative section Problem Solving and Data Sufficiency questions are presented in a mixed format. The section is 75 minutes long and includes a total of 37 multiple choice questions.
In the verbal section Sentence Corrections, Reading Comprehension, and Critical Reasoning questions are presented in a mixed format. There are a total of 41 questions to be answered within 75 minutes.
Analytical Writing

Analysis of an Issue: 1 Topic 30 minutes.
Analysis of an Argument: 1 Topic 30 minutes.
Optional Rest Break 5 minutes.

Quantitative (Problem Solving & Data Sufficiency): 37 Questions 75 minutes.
Optional Rest Break 5 minutes.

Verbal (Reading Comprehension, Critical Reasoning, & Sentence Correction): 41 Questions 75 minutes.

Approximate total time for the test - 4 hours

GMAT VERBAL SECTION

The 75-minute verbal section has a significant impact on your overall GMAT score. A good score in the verbal section will definitely increase ones percentile.
 
GMAT Verbal emphasizes the importance of English Grammar and correct English usage. We use colloquialisms and casual expressions in our daily interactions or conversations.
